Full Album Archive - Classic Army SL8
It's been a little over 2yrs since I picked up this rifle........and it's finally at a point I can call it done (well ok almost, I'd like to get one thing, but it's not important).
Onto the pics!
Ah such an oldie......brand new in the box, completely oblivious to the mods in its future.
Year 1:
Classic Army SL8 (bought local from Young's Army Navy Surplus in Grand Rapids)
Stock barrel 6.04mm 510mm tightbore
Stock gearbox (Aluminum piston head, gears, piston, metal cylinder head)
Stock hopup and bucking
Stock FPS 330 (it's a standard G36, so this is normal, the upgraded marketing lines are BS)
Ok so it didn't take long (to be exact 1 game, or part of one anyways) to discover some rather major short comings in the stock SL8.
Year 1.25:
Madbull Black Python v2 509mm 6.03
Guarder SP110 (pushed the FPS to 415)
Guarder 70 degree Hard type bucking and nub (dropped the FPS to around 300)
Systema Standard Torque Up Gears (TU) Mine tore a tooth within a few weeks (not sure why) so it was back to the stock gears
STAR G36 flat top carrying handle (it took all of 5 shots to realize the stock carrying handle just didn't cut it)
Ebay Banned 5 inch fluted barrel extensions (x2 to cover the long inner barrel)
Tokyo Marui SOCOM Silencer
Private Parts M4 Magwell conversion (one disadvantage to the 20 round mags that came with the SL8 was I'd loose 8-10BB's in the G36 magwell, which didn't leave many shots, standard size G36 midcaps were great EXCEPT when prone I wasn't able to aim downwards very well due to the mag length)
Action Adventure M16VN midcaps (x2 fed fine in the magwell and looked great)
NC STAR MKIII ACOG style 4x32 scope (bought it for an M4, but ended up using it on the SL8)
At the last game of the year the rifle chrono'd in at 300FPS range was abysmal thanks to that air leak.
During the winter I didn't do much to the rifle, the constant low FPS was pissing me off, work and school kept me busy. However, I did find time for a little upgrade here and there.
Year 1.5
Guarder SP130 (I figured I'd left the spring compressed so a new spring would fix it, I was wrong)
Stock Classic Army gears (they held up pulling a Guard SP130 with no problems)
Eagle Hummer 1300 high torque motor (installed and barely used due to the other existing issues)
Leapers Scope I honestly have no clue on the magnification, but it's clear and crisp, and perfect on the rifle. I yanked it off a cheap UTG L96 (not one of my better purchases in my career, but it was fun to have).
A friend gave me the idea for the stock, keeping 2 spacer plates in but leaving the rest out for a unique sniper stock look. Other than that nothing changed. Except got laid off early in the start of the new year (what a great New Years gift eh?), but eventually found the funds to truly make the rifle into a true Designated Marksman Rifle.
Year 1.75-2.0
Guarder Bore-up kit (cylinder, cylinder head, air nozzle, and piston head). One thing to note is the Classic Army version 3 gearbox uses version 2 internals, probably to save money. So I ended up buying a boreup kit for an M16 but using a bore-up airnozzle for a G36.
Systema High torque motor (got it cheap figured I'd throw it in for kicks)
Systema Helical Super Torque Up gears (Bought them, figured I'd use them, work and sound great).
Stock Classic Army Bucking with Guarder nub (don't ask, but the Guarder did not create a seal around the Madbull Barrel at all and was leaking all of the air, what's odd is I've tested the same bucking on another Madbull barrel I own with no problems)
Prowin G36 aluminum hopup (absolutely the best hopup I've seen, agressive, consistent, and best of all it holds it's setting with no hint of working loose.)
STAR Green Label 20 round style PMAGS.
The bucking solved the air issue. FPS is around 440FPS, though with the aggressive hopup I assume the FPS to be much higher as I know what 470FPS looks like and the SL8 shoots very similar.
A two year process, definitely an experience to say the least. While I've poured probably more money into it that I'd ever planned or wanted, after testing it's performance for 2 weeks, and seeing the results I can't say I could be any happier.
Year 3.0
NC STAR 3-9x40mm scope
ACM 190rd FDE PMAG
The last update. Got a scope as the old 4x32 wasn't cutting it at the ranges thes rifle was able to shoot at.
