Overview
In 2007 G&P Products released their M series high speed and high torque motors. The M120 quickly gained a reputation for reliable and extreme high speed performance for high ROF rifles. On the opposite end, the M160 became well known as a high torque performance motor for high FPS springs. G&P markets both long and short versions for version 2 (v2) and version 3 (v3) gearboxes. For the next 3 years G&P didn’t release a new motor, but then in 2010 they released the M170 “Devil Jet” High Torque motor. As of currently there is only a long type available for the M170.
Accessories
When I got the package I was extremely surprised to find an included packet containing G&P’s (in)famous screws and spade connectors for screwing the electrical wires directly to the motor. The packet also includes color coded heat shrink tubing.
Externals Review
As seen it is indeed the G&P M170 “Devil Jet” with some cool graphics on the sticker. It’s simply a motor so there’s not really much to look at, especially considered it’s stuck in a motor grip and never seen. The bottom is clearly marked which end is for the positive terminal.
Internals Review
Internally the M170 is centered around a pair of “rare earth” magnets, extremely strong ones at that. I’ve used many high torque and high speed motors. Anything ranging from an A&K high torque, to a SystemA Magnum, and the G&P M170 far exceeds them in every possible way. Even on a basic 8.4v 1500mAh battery the M170 has an extreme spin to it. Attempts to turn the motor by hand (a good way to judge how high torque a motor is) resulted in a very sore set of fingers for a few minutes.
Performance
Performance wise I am extremely impressed. I’ve used some G&P M160’s in the past, and they were able to crank some very high springs without trouble. So when I decided to test the M170 I figured a basic Guarder SP150 (the Guarder equivalent of a SystemA M150) would be a decent test. After assembling the test gearbox, I attached the G&P M170 and pulled the trigger. The motor immediately responded and effortlessly pulled back the aluminum piston without hesitation, even on a cheap Chinese 8.4v 1500mAh battery. Oddly a 9.6v 1200mAh did not provide a huge increase in trigger response or motor speed. This may be in part due to the Infinate Torque Up (ITU) gears, or the Active Braking (A/B) MOSFET, but this is hard to test due to the requirements of the SP150 spring already in the gearbox.
Final Thoughts and Upgradeability
The price of the G&P M170 “Devil Jet” is a big turn off at ~$75 USD~ but the performance is worth the extra money. For someone that has handled the best of the best motors, the M170 possibly surpasses even the mighty SystemA “Magnum” motors. If you’re looking for an extreme high torque performance motor, this is the place to look, especially since it’s about $10 USD cheaper than the SystemA “Magnums”.
Externals Score: 9/10
I really should give it a full 10, but for the price some flashier colors could have been done. A silly reason, but none the less it would have been cool to see.
Internals Score: 10/10
Long term testing is required, but initial testing proves this motor capable of more than I could test it to.
Overall score: 9.5/10
The only reason I will knock off a half point overall is due to the higher price. You truly get what you pay for however, the G&P M170 “Devil Jet” will give you more than the unit costs. I’m hoping to see many more high quality G&P products like this.
