Modifying a VFC SCAR-H for CA/A&K/G&P SR25 Magazines

Overview
Since the release of the Vega Force Company Mk17 SCAR-H the owners have been forced into buying the expensive VFC FN SCAR-H magazines. Normally this isn't a huge issue. VFC SCAR-H magazines come in a pack of 3, and cost around $90 USD for the set. However, that still works out to $30 per magazine. In comparison, a M14 owner can expect to pay around $25, as can a SR-25 owner.
Editor's Note 2017: Prices have significantly fallen for VFC SCAR-H mags, but SR25 mags can be found for much less.
It's been a long standing theory since I bought my VFC SCAR-H almost 3 years ago, that it could be modified to fit SR-25 magazines. Since I had a spare DBOY Mk17 SCAR-H sitting around I decided to give the theory a test.
Accessoriy Modification
On the left is a standard G&P SR-25 magazine. The area in question is the stabilizer in the middle of the mag.
In the middle is a modified 20LR PMAG. This was another test of theory. With the rib in the VFC magwell (pictures in the next section) I assumed cutting a channel into the mag itself would get around the issue without chancing a modification to the rifle.
On the right is a standard VFC Mk17 SCAR-H magazine. As you can see the stabilizing rib is much thinner and only occupies the right side of the back instead of the entire back section of the mag.
Externals Modifications
On the left is the stock VFC SCAR-H magwell. You can clearly see the offending rib that makes the entire rifle proprietary.
On the right was the test magwell from a DBOY SCAR-H (VFC clone). As you can see I have dremeled, filed, and sanded the rib away.
And the rib gone.
Internals Modification
Through an odd turn of events I was forced to make a custom mag catch for the DBOY SCAR-H (don't ask, it's a long story), and when I attempted the first mod, the SR-25 mag fit and fed the DBOY SCAR-H without issue. However, when I attempted the magwell mod with the VFC I came across a slight issue.
The SR-25 mag catch slot on the mag sits slightly lower than the SCAR-H mag catch. Thus the mag catch cannot lock into the mag, and the mag will freely drop out of the magwell (into your foot!)
I cannot stress this enough. BE VERY CAREFUL! I used a dremel tool with a steady hand to do the initial fitting, and then used a file to clean up the cuts and do a final fitting. BE VERY CAREFUL! If you remove too much material from the mag catch you WILL ruin the mag catch so that it no longer feeds SR-25 magazines OR SCAR-H magazines.
BE VERY CAREFUL
Performance
There really isn't much to say.
SR-25 mags fit and feed!
SCAR-H mags fit and feed!
Magpul 20LR mags fit and feed with or without the rib modification.
Final Thoughts and Upgradeability
With this mod you do lose some of the unique look of the FN SCAR-H magazines with their unique bumpers. However, it does allow you to swap mags with your SR-25 teammates, and gives things a slightly Call of Duty or Battlefield 3 look.
This mod will work for the DBOY Mk17 SCAR-H since it is a clone of the VFC, as well as the Echo 1 ASC-H (aka SCAR-H) since it is a rebrand of the DBOY Mk17.
The mod allows any Classic Army, A&K, or G&P SR-25 magazine to fit, either midcap or high cap. I don’t have access to any JG/Echo 1 SR-25 magazines to test, but they should fit since the JG SR-25 is a semi-clone of the G&P. STAR/ARES SR-25 magazines since they are proprietary to the STAR/ARES SR25. The G&G SR-25 will accept G&P SR-25 magazines with minor sanding, so in theory G&G SR-25 magazines will work as well, however, they might wobble in the magwell more than other brands.
