Full Album Archive - DBOY Mk17 SCAR-H 5.56 Conversion
So I picked up yet another SCAR-H (this is becoming serious addiction I think)...
This time I picked up a Echo 1 ASC-H (Advanced Squad Carbine - Heavy), a rebrand of the DBOY SCAR-H that I reviewed a little over 4 years ago. Internally it is almost 100% identical to the original DBOY, the only difference between the two is the bucking, and quite frankly, the Echo 1 (Madbull) is awful compared to the stock DBOY. Not that any of that matters for this build.
Year 1
Echo 1 (DBOY) ASC-H FDE
Custom quick change gearbox. This was somewhat easy, the market QC gearboxes aren't much more than a bored out back of the gearbox, so I just followed suit.
Year 1.1
Kydex Sheet (FDE)
Custom 5.56 conversion magwell. While the adjustment to the magwell isn't difficult on a VFC (or the DBOY/Echo1), it will require a custom mag catch. This mod will NOT work on a WE AEG SCAR-H so don't bother.
Year 1.3
Element AAC 51T Blackout 5.56 QD flash hider
Evike 190rd BAMF M4/M16 magazine(Tan)
GATE PICO SSR 3
Guarder M4/M16 Standard pistol grip (FDE)
ICS Reinforced Polycarb Piston with 8 Steel Teeth and bearing piston head
Matrix 3000 High Torque (Long Type)
Probably the biggest order for this rifle. Added a GATE brand MOSFET to protect the trigger contacts. I use the PICO SSR series in all of my customer VFC SCAR's to date and it was the logical choice for this rifle as well to keep the realistic breakdown feature, instead of drilling ugly holes through the receiver. I also use ICS orange pistons and since I don't feel like having to break this rifle down any time soon, it was added to the build as a longevity piece. The stock DBOY gray motors are not built for speed or torque and it showed when testing the rifle so a Matrix 3000 High Torque replaced it as well.
Mag catch and receiver have been finalized. One thing that has always bothered me about the DBOY/Echo1 pistol grip is that is noticeably green. It virtually matches Foliage Green or Ranger Green. The Guarder Tan grip is not perfectly matched, but it is better. A customer brought me a AEG for work and included a BAMF mag for testing, and it fed so well I decided to pick up a set as well for evaluation, so far they have fed extremely well in 3 other rifles on the bench.
Also an identifying feature of the DBOY/Echo1 SCAR's is the semi-gloss black gas block. I had some time to kill while waiting for the parts order to come in, so a coat of steel colored paint fixed that. The AAC 51T was added as part of the 5.56 conversion.
Year 1.5
ACM 1.25" SCAR RIS covers
ACM PEQ15 with light and laser
ACM Replica Eotech 553 (custom paint)
G&P Tango Down style QD vertical grip
Tango Down 1.25" SCAR RIS covers
Tango Down 4.25" SCAR RIS covers
VFC FDE (Khaki) pistol grip
The trademarks on the Echo1 irk me, and I honestly wish I had a DBOY blank upper, so that may be on the to-buy list still, but for the most part this project has turned out exactly as I could have hoped. I did end up overspending and decided to just quit wasting time trying to get the Guarder pistol grip to fit perfectly and bought a VFC replacement that was a direct drop in fit.
