Real Steel History
The original design for these magazines came from Travis Haley’s custom AK (the legendary MAG-K-001) during his time at Magpul Industries. In addition to the modifications to the rifle, he also customized the Saiga 7.62x39 magazine with a PMAG Ranger plate.
Overview
When I ordered the JG Mag-K, I figured it would be a great time to also pick up some matching midcaps to the hicap included with the rifle.
While Evike lists them as “Matrix” they are in fact CYMA brand. As with all “Matrix” items, it’s simply Evike’s in-house name for products they bring directly into the country. They come from the same factories as many name brand products, and quite frequently, in the name brand packaging.
Externals Review
Externally and internally there’s not really much to comment on. As far as finish, they feel exactly like the JG/Echo 1 Mag-K/OCW magazines and look similar except for the black baseplate that does not have the hi-cap winding slot. I do wish the mags came with the ranger plates though.
Performance
Unfortunately I was only able to test the mags in the JG Mag-K and a CYMA SR47, and not in more common brand AK’s. However, they locked in securely and fed reliably. I will try to update this section as I am able to test the mags in other brand rifles.
Final Thoughts and Upgradeability
Normally I am very wary of CYMA products. They are very affordable, and these mags are no exception, but this usually comes at the cost of quality. There aren’t many things that can go wrong with these mags, but only time will tell if the springs will maintain strength or weaken very quickly and stop feeding. For the time being though I am extremely happy them, they look, and feel perfect.
Externals Score: 10/10
The plastic feels strong, and they lock into the test rifles flawlessly. I wish they had Ranger Plates like the real Mag-K mags, but it’s not a necessity.
Internals Score: 10/10
As noted, the mags could tentatively breakdown quickly and stop functioning. But currently I will give these full marks for performance during testing.
Overall score: 10/10
For the price they are a great and unique option to the standard AK style mags out there.
