Overview
Some time ago Red Wolf Airsoft (RWA) started marketing their “own” airsoft accessories. Since they are a Hong Kong based company I rarely order from them since the shipping tends to make it more expensive than buying the same item from Evike if they carry it as well. Then I started the SR47 project version 2.0. For this build I decided to try a short dot, and low and behold Evike carried the RWA 1.5-6x24 Fiber Optic Rifle Scope. Before I could order it however, they went “out of stock.” The same day the “Black Owl Gear” (BOG) 1.5x-6x24 became available, just $21 USD more…
So what does $21 more dollars get you? Is it the same or is it different?
Accessories
The scope does NOT include any scope rings or a one piece mount, so be sure to order some sort of scope mount at the same time as the scope.
The scope does include a set of front and rear flip open lens caps, as well as two cleaning clothes that come rubber banded around the fiber optic.
Externals Review
The scope comes neatly packed inside of foam sheets and a plastic bag. I was very happy with the packaging and that the scope was unscratched.
The scope is made from aluminum, and the 30mm tube makes it very easy to find scope rings or a one piece mount that will fit the scope body.
The fiber optic is somewhat disappointing give the size of the optic used. I was expecting a much brighter reticule, however, it is noticeable enough when looking through the scope in daylight or at indoor light levels.
The 1.5-6x magnification adjustment ring has a small nub to aid in faster magnification changing, while the elevation and windage knobs are protected by standard screw on caps. Both caps have very nice rubber oring to keep them from coming loose. However, they do not have tethers, so it is still possible to lose them over time.
The reticule is an interesting combination between the stick sight found on the Trijicon Accupoint and a traditional mil-dot crosshair setup.
As you can see in the picture the center features an illuminated triangle with a post going to the bottom similar to the Trijicon, however, the post is solid black. The ring is reminiscent of an Eotech, and the crosshairs are filled out with standard mil-dot type hold overs.
Performance
Adjustment of the magnification also reminds me of my China replica Elcan SpecterDR, the 1.5x doesn’t quite feel like true 1.5x. It feels more like 2.5 or 3x which I find is generally the starting point where magnification is noticeable. This isn’t a real problem for me, but some people may find this disorienting when trying to use the optic.
Final Thoughts and Upgradeability
Unfortunately there will not be a review of the scope mount used in this review since it came from a random China listing on ebay. However, I think it does a wonderful job at holding the BOG 1.5-6x24 scope. The scope is clear and easy to use, and lets face it, it just looks tacticool on top of a rifle.
Externals Score: 9/10
Being a Chinese replica, it’s a given that the “fiber optic” isn’t going to be of the highest quality. Which in turn means the reticule illumination isn’t going to be as good as a real scope. However, it does work, and unlike a lot of scopes, will never run out of a battery. The build quality is excellent feeling and I’m pleased with the overall effect.
Overall score: 8/10
Despite my praise of the quality of the scope itself, I do have to criticize the quality of the fiber optic. It could be much better, especially for the price. I’d be very interested to put this beside an RWA scope to compare quality. The $21 price jump was also poorly timed and I am left wondering if the RWA was the better deal.
